Why Do I Pee So Much When I Drink Water?

You are drinking the water. The bottle is on your desk, the app is pinging, you have put away 80 ounces before lunch — and you have also made five trips to the bathroom and still feel foggy and dry-mouthed by mid-afternoon. Why do I pee so much when I drink water — and why do I still feel thirsty?

This is the frustrating part. You can be in net fluid deficit and still be urinating frequently, because volume and concentration are two different problems.

Sweat is not just water. It carries sodium out with it, along with smaller amounts of potassium, magnesium, calcium and chloride. Replace the lost fluid with plain water only and you have restored some of the volume while further diluting what is left of the minerals. What researchers found when they actually measured retention

In 2016, a team led by Ronald Maughan published a study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition that asked a question most hydration marketing skips: of the fluid you drink, how much do you still have two hours later? Read the paper.

They gave subjects one litre of a given beverage over 30 minutes, then collected urine for the next four hours, and scored each of 13 drinks against still water. They called the result the Beverage Hydration Index.

Still water was the baseline, set at 1.0. The drinks that clearly outperformed it were an oral rehydration solution and milk, both full-fat and skimmed. In other words, subjects held onto meaningfully more fluid from those drinks than from the same volume of water. Notably, sports drinks, carbonated drinks, tea, coffee, and orange juice all scored similarly to plain water — which is worth remembering the next time something is marketed to you as dramatically more hydrating.

The mechanisms behind the two winners differ, and both are instructive. Milk's protein and fat slow how quickly the stomach empties, so fluid arrives in the bloodstream gradually instead of all at once — plasma osmolality never crashes, so the kidneys never get the signal to flush. The rehydration solution works differently: its sodium and glucose content means the fluid entering circulation carries dissolved minerals with it, so blood concentration stays stable as volume rises.
